Being out in the wild is a normal part of life here. Everyone from reindeer herders, anglers, and hunters to postal workers has travelled through the wilderness. You can follow their footsteps hiking along the centuries-old paths.
Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park suits beginners and day hikers. If you are an experienced hiker, set a course for the Käsivarsi and Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Areas. Halti and other high fells await you in Käsivarsi. See the beautiful, rare fell plants, or gaze at the butterflies – with any luck, you’ll also spot the lovable lemmings. The Nordkalottleden Trail – Kalottireitti in some maps is the only marked path, travelling 60 kilometres through the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area. The Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area has no marked routes. The magnificent sand dunes are among the most interesting sights in the area. The best time to hike in Enontekiö is between 20 June and 30 September.
