  • Are there many mosquitoes in the summer?

We hardly have any mosquitoes in June. There are more mosquitoes in July, but their numbers vary from year to year. In open spaces on the fells, the mosquitoes are not a problem, especially if there’s any wind. When you are properly prepared, our little flying friends are unable to torment you. We recommend long sleeve shirts, long pants, and hats with mosquito netting. It also pays to take mosquito repellent with you.

  • I want to do short hiking trips in the nearby area. Where can I go?

Many 2-18 km long hiking trails leave from the Fell Lapland Visitor Center in Hetta. You can go to Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park for a day trip from Vuontispirtti in Ylikyrö. Routes of different lengths leave from the Kilpisjärvi Visitor Center to the area around Saana and the Malla Strict Nature Reserve.

  • Are the northern lights visible today?

The northern lights are a colorful light phenomenon caused by particles from solar storms hitting the atmosphere. The northern lights can be predicted. For more information on the predictions, see http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/3.

The northern lights are best seen in the dark, generally around midnight. If you see the northern lights early in the evening, you are in luck – this often means that they will be particularly vibrant all night long.
