Palojoensuu According to Finns, Finland is shaped like a young dancing lady. Accordingly the village of Palojoensuu is situated in her armpit! The village lies alongside the Muoniojoki and Palojoki Rivers and borders to the west with Swedish Kingdom. From Palojoensuu it is about 26 km to Hetta, the centre of Enontekiö municipality.
The fourth church of Enontekiö was situated in Palojoensuu from 1827 to 1856, until a new church was built in Hetta. The Palojoensuu church was pulled down and its logs sold at auction to inhabitants living by the river. Palojoensuu was one of the battlefields in the last phase of the Lapland War between 1944 - 1945. Therefore, the buildings of the village were completely destroyed at the time. The "Four Winds Road" begins from the village, so named in 1947, after a book by the famous local author and veterinarian Yrjö Kokko. The road was already partially existant in 1939. The route itself had been used since early times, as a winter route from Palojoensuu - Karesvanto - Kilpisjärvi - Skibotten by the Arctic Ocean, Norway.
