Christianity

The first church of Enontekiö was built in the 14th Century in Rounala (now part of NE Sweden). According to legend, it was built by three Sami brothers.


Early explorers

Lapland has been interesting explorers since the olden days. The first pieces of work about Lapland included Olaus Magnus’s book "History of the Northern Nations" (1555) and Johannes Schefferus’s "Lapponia" (1673).


Järämä WWII Fortification camp

Järämä renovated fortification camp, known as Sturmbock-Stellung to the Germans, is located in Enontekiö municipality, in the north-west of Finland, about 20 km from Karesuvanto village, in the direction of Kilpisjärvi.


Prehistory

All manner of research methods have been used in finding out about the prehistory of the nordic countries, but as of yet no set conclusions have been agreed upon. According to several research sources, there was a primitive culture called Komsa or Gorravá


Reindeer husbandry

Certain theories about the origins of reindeer husbandry have been found to contradict each other. Reindeer most evidently developed from wild deer, but the initial date and place of origin of reindeer herding remains a debatable issue.


Seita - sacrificial stones and religious objects

Seitas, (sieidi in the Sami language), were worshipping sites of the ancient Sami communities. There are hundreds of these sacrificial sites throughout Lapland. There are two types of Seita: stone or wood seitas.


The Lapland War in Käsivarsi

In 1944, the 20th German Mountain Regiment received new orders, to keep the Petsamo area under their rule, but change the direction of their frontline to face south instead of east. Those behind the frontline were ordered to build two fortification camps.
