Hunting

The Enontekiö region with its expansive wilderness is challenging hunting terrain. In addition to birch and pine forest stands, hunting may also be practiced in the open fell regions of Enontekiö. The majority of the huge municipality belongs to the Metsähallitus small game permit areas, so there is plenty of space for hunters. The Metsähallitus permits may be purchased from the Fell Lapland Nature Centre in Enontekiö. The activity programme companies of the municipality sell their own hunting packages, which include other services in addition to hunting. The Enontekiö Forest Collective also sells small game permits for its own region.
The residents of the Enontekiö Municipality have free hunting rights for State land of their municipality. Hunting is an important extra source of income for locals who receive income from natural sources of livelihood. Each year a verified quota of willow grouse hunting permits are sold to non-residents of the municipality. The size of this quota depends on the annually made triangulation calculations for game.
As the willow grouse hunting permits sold to non-municipal residents are set to a daily quota, not everyone manages to get a permit for the start of the hunting period. Willow grouse may be hunted in Enontekiö from September all the way through to the end of March, so everyone will get the chance to hunt.
