    Angelica (Angelica Archangelica)
 
Angelica means archangel, who according to the story brought the plant from heaven. The Sámi peoples have eaten angelica as is, cooked in reindeer milk, or served with fish fat.  

     Arctic fox – Alopex lagopus   

The Arctic fox is a very endangered mammal in Finland. According to estimates in 2001, there were 10-20 Arctic foxes living in Finland, but in 2004 only eight individuals were spotted.  

     Bluethroat, “Lapland’s nightingale"  
 
The bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), Lapland’s nightingale, is Lapland’s provincial bird, and a typical species of bird for the Kilpisjärvi area, seen from mountain birch zones to bare hill tops.  

     Glacier crowfoot (Ranunculus glacialis)   
 
The delicately elegant glacier crowfoot (10-15 cm) is a hardy species that grows in fell regions with long-lasting snow, by stream and in fragmented rock fields.  

     Mountain avens (Dryas octopetala)  

The mountain avens (Dryas octopetala) is a typical species of the Rosaceae family found in Arctic and mountain tundra. Mountain avens is an eight-petal plant, which is also evident from its Latin name.

    Norway lemming (Lemmus lemmus)

The lemming is a member of the mole family. We have two species of lemming: Norway lemming and wood lemming. The Norway lemming lives in fell and mountainous regions.

In Iitto, along Highway 21, 56 kilometres north of Karesuvanto are permafrost palsas of several metres in height may be admired using the duckboards constructed in 2002.  

    Roseroot – Rhodiola rosea   
 
This plant, common for the Arm of Finland region, gets its name from its tuberous, rose-scented roots. It grows on rocks, places where snow lingers, and on stream banks.  


Silene

The silene (Silene wahlbergella) is 5-20 cm tall, and erect and single stemmed fell plant. The protected silene only occurs in the great fells of the Arm of Finland.


Snowy owl - nyctea scandiaca 

A migratory bird in Finland that only nest during good years for lemmings. Large sized, 53-65 cm. In addition to lemmings, the snowy owl also eats, e.g. willow grouse and water fowl. A very threatened species.
